Sonic Postcards is a unique and innovative project that enables primary and secondary school pupils to explore and compare their local sound environments through the exchange of sound postcards with other schools via the Internet.
The project is concerned with the impact of sound on our lives and as with an ordinary postcard it offers the opportunity for people to exchange information about their local environments with a view to providing windows into a variety of other places, lives and cultures.
Sonic Postcards involves sound artists visiting schools to help pupils aged between 9 and 14 years to record the sounds of their environment and to explore the possibilities for creativity through the manipulation of sound with technology. The projects aims to help pupils:
- Gain new insight into their environment and the environments of others
- Develop new skills in music making with technology
- Develop their personal communication skills both with their peers and with adults other than teachers
