Practitioners, companies and music-based organizations are offered expert advice at Music Industry seminars in locations across the South West. Industry speakers impart specialist information on how the commercial music industry works. These events provide an excellent opportunity to network with key music industry figures and to meet others who work in music in the SW region. They highlight learning and professional development opportunities and support agencies across the South West and are often linked with evening showcases by local bands. There are two basic forms:

Advanced full day seminars for professional, semi-professional & student musicians, organisations and individuals involved in the music industry in the South West. These in-depth seminars each offer specialist information on how one specific area of the music industry works. Individual seminar topics include:

- Promotion
- Live performance
- Record labels

Dartington Plus, the South West’s regional music development agency, is presenting a series of free seminars about how to get ahead in the music industry in venues throughout the region.
The seminars give musicians and people interested in the music industry the chance to get specialist information from expert speakers on how the industry works and to find out about the professional development opportunities that exist within the industry.
The sessions take place in Plymouth at the Barbican Theatre on Saturday 28th October from 2pm to 5pm (in association with the Orange Plymouth Music Week); in Bristol at Colston Hall on Friday 24th November from 10am to 5pm; and in Exmouth at the Blackmore Theatre on Saturday 2nd December from 2.30pm to 4pm.
The seminars are designed to help musicians, managers, promoters and others succeed and survive in the music industry. At each seminar, advice and guidance will be given on subjects such as the A&R process, what to do with your demo tapes, recording & management contracts, music development opportunities and professional development. There will also be Q&A sessions, showcase gigs by local bands, and time to meet other people working in music in the South West of England.
The expert speakers include Radio 1 DJ mary Anne Hobbs, music industry lawyer Sarah Waddington, record label manager Rick Rogers, promoter Matt Booth and Musicians’ Union rep Paul Gray.
There will be an evening showcase of local up & coming bands after each seminar.
