Jean Abreu
Jean trained at the Laban Centre, and worked with Protein Dance for 4 years. He has been creating his own work for the last 2 years and was winner of the Jerwood Award 2003. Jean is currently Associate Artist at ‘The Place’. Jean’s racially mixed Brazilian background, combined with European experiences and exposure to ideas about multiculturalism, colonialism, and the African Diaspora provide a unique perspective on hybridised cultural experiences. As an artist, his goal is to engage people on an individual and intimidate level, communicating in a subtle and emotional way, to open peoples minds to an understanding of and respect for different cultures. Through dance he hopes to promote multiculturalism and tolerance by presenting a movement language influenced by many cultures that is relevant and engaging to people from diverse backgrounds.

Tom Armstrong
Tom Armstrong was born in 1968. He studied composition with Roger Marsh at York University and with Colin Matthews, Magnus Lindberg and Oliver Knussen at the Britten-Pears School. His work has been performed all over the UK by leading ensembles and soloists and has been heard at festivals such as Cheltenham and Meltdown. He has been working with dance since 1998 and has shown work at the Union Chapel and Sadlers Wells. He is currently working on an interdisciplinary project using dance, music and film to dramatise the novel ‘Black Maria’ by Diana Wynne Jones.

Angus Balbernie
Angus is a Director/Choreographer. He originally trained with sculptor David Gilbert. After studying in Tai Chi C’huan in Chung Chaou (China), Angus studied dance and theatre at Dartington College of Arts. He has made over 50 pieces in the USA, Europe, South America and Canada. Angus also teaches part-time at the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance and Dans Acadamie of Arnhem.

Michael Bassett
Michael is an American PhD candidate in music at Dartington. His research focuses on overlapping issues in vernacular and electroacoustic music theory and practice. He is the UK ORS recipient (Overseas Research Scholarship) in music 2002-2006. Michael is a SPNM shortlist composer and spent a week in August 2002 studying as an artist in residence at The Steim Institute (Holland). Bassett's composition “Ethnography?” was chosen for inclusion on ICMC Money Project CD, and for live performance at the ICMC Hong Kong festival (spring 2003). Bassett has also released two self produced albums and contributed to numerous other projects in various roles (from guest musician and performer). He has toured extensively, performing in the United States and Western Europe. Michael currently works part-time as an affiliate lecturer in Music and Arts & Cultural Management at Dartington College of Arts (Devon UK), and with The Drake Music Project and Soundworks (Plymouth UK).

Christopher Best (co-director - music)
Christopher Best is a senior lecturer and reader in music composition at Dartington College of Arts. His freelance work embraces composition both for the concert hall and for contemporary dance, including works for S.P.N.M., Kokoro, Scottish Dance Theatre, Jamaican National Dance and Bimba Dance Co. Educational work related to dance includes directing the Composers/Choreographers Exchanges in London, 1998/2000, Madrid 2001/2002 and acting as a Jury member of the ‘Certamen Coreográfico’ Madrid 2002. Chris has also been on the S.W. Arts Advisory panel and has been composer in residence at the Academies of Zwolle (Holland) and Malmo (Sweden).

Hannah Chiswell (documenter – video/still image)
Hannah Chiswell is currently working with text and still or moving image. She has worked as a documentary maker for the BBC and freelance. She has made a short film in Israel and the Occupied Territories. Hannah is very interested in darkness and light. Hannah is making video and still photography for M&DE.

Emilyn Claid (co-director – dance)
Emilyn is Director of Choreography at Dartington College of Arts. In the 60’s she was a ballet dancer at the National Ballet of Canada, in the 70’s she was a founder member of X6 Dance Space and editor for New Dance Magazine. Emilyn was the Artistic Director for Extemporary Dance Theatre in the 80’s and a freelance, independent dance artist, performer and choreographer in the 90’s. In the late '90s she did a PhD and then became a AHRB research fellow at University of Surrey and director of PAL Dance Labs. She has created performances for herself including ‘Virginia Minx at Play’ (1992) ‘Laid Out Lovely’ (1994) and ‘Stories of a girl Star’ (1999). She has choreographed for many dance companies including Phoenix, Ludus, Hong King City Dance Company, and CandoCo Dance Company.

Chris Crickmay
Chris originally trained as an architect, but has worked throughout his career in visual art, both as a teacher in various colleges (including Dartington), and as a practitioner. His visual practice has also included a continuing interest in dance and making environments for performance. He is co-author, with Miranda Tufnell, of two books: ‘Body Space Image’, ‘Dance Books’ (1990), and ‘A Widening Field: Journeys in Body and Imagination’, Dance Books (2004).

Hilary Jeffery
Hilary is a trombonist and composer born in England (1971), based in Amsterdam. He studied at Dartington College of Arts, University of York and with James Fulkerson at the European Dance Development Centre in Arnhem. Hilary has worked with many dancers and choreographers, including: Aurora Corsano, Vallia Gala, Mary O’Donnell Fulkerson, Joad da Silva and Saburo Teslingawara.

Sylvia Hallett
Sylvia works as an improviser and composer and has played and composed for a number of choreographers: Jacky Lansley, Emilyn Claid and Miranda Tufnell. She has also worked in theatre – RSC, Young Vic – and composed the music for several BBC radio dramas.

Stine Eva Jorgensen
Stine is a performance maker/performer with a broad interest and background in theatre, movement, writing and visual arts. She has a particular passion for interdisciplinary and site specific work. Stine is currently completing an MA and collaborating on performance projects in Amsterdam.

Jane Mason
Jane is a performer/choreographer based in Devon. She trained in Dramatic Arts at Bretton Hall before becoming a founding member of Random Dance Company (1993 – 97). Since 1997 Jane has been making her own project work, dancing for various choreographers and collaborating with theatre directors. She is currently completing a pilot film commission for South East Dance NDA, performing ‘The Brow’, a solo with live piano, and will be working with Mark Bruce towards the development of a new work.

Nicky Matthews (project manager)
Nicky works part-time as music administrator for DCA, as well as for M&de, one of a number of independent arts-related freelance projects. She was a music student at Dartington in the early 90’s and continues to perform and teach flute and piano.

Michael J McInerney
Michael is a composer/calligrapher/performer. He studied mathematics and music at the University of York, and trained in Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese flute, with Yoshikaza Iwamoto. Currently studying with the zen master calligrapher Tenchu Terayama and the composer Frank Denyer, as part of a research doctorate at Dartington. Michael’s work sits on the boundary between visual inscription and musical performance. The results range from scores without performances, to performances without scores, and many points in-between.

Andy Pennington (technical collaborator)
A former member of the technical team at Dartington College of Arts, Andy has worked with artists from many disciplines, supporting their technical requirements. For the last two years Andy has worked mainly with classical musicians, sound engineering, in venues including Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.

Hazel Plowman
Hazel co-directs a Bath-based interdisciplinary arts company called Eshoda Arts, who combine contemporary dance, visual arts, sound and text in performance, installation and exhibition work. Hazel is particularly interested in finding a synthesis between art forms and exploring the possibilities of collaboration.

Susie Reeves-Smith
Susie trained in dance at The Place and Laban Centre with Transitions Dance Company. She performed with Geographical Duvet, Gaby Agis, Aletta Collins and Adventures in Motion Pictures. Susie formed Momentum Dance Company after establishing a dance curriculum at King Edward Vl Community College. Both performance choreography and teaching are ongoing.

Heidi Rustgaard
Originally from Norway, Heidi came to London in 1992 to study dance at the London Studio Centre. Since 1999 she has co-directed h2dance, creating work as a choreographer, designer and a performer. In 2004 Heidi won the Shrinking Cities Competition with the project Cow – the udder way, in collaboration with Ulrike Steven (artist/architect), Susanne Thomas (choreographer), Gareth Morris (architect), Paul Cotter (filmmaker) and Eika Sindlinga (architect).

Malaika Sarco
Malaika Sarco is an improviser, dancer and performer. She holds an MA in devised theatre from Dartington College of Arts. She is currently completing her PhD and training with Anne Terese De Keersmaekers at Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (PARTS). Her research is supported by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation in the USA.

Diana Theodores (documenter - writing)
Diana Theodores is Research Fellow in Choreography at Dartington College of Arts and widely published in Dance. Diana is also a partner in Theatre 4 Business, a corporate training consulting company that brings arts and business together.

Karen Wimhurst
Karen is a freelance composer/musician. She has written for various ensembles such as Mr. McFalls Chamber, Welsh National Opera, Solid Strings, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Grimethorpe Brass Band and the Allegri Quartet. Currently she performs with Zaum (free improvising band recently featured in the Wire and Jazz UK) and is working on a theatre/choral work for Sage Gateshead and the Lillians.
